Missed-class follow-up
August 2026 · Training courses
Onsite classes now track why a student missed one, not just that they did. Attendance moves from a single tick box to four statuses, a missed-class email goes out automatically, and students can justify an absence or catch up with class work — all from the class page.
Why we built it
A tick box only ever answered "were they there?". It couldn't say whether an absence was excused, whether the student later made up the missed content, or what a teacher expected them to do about it — so that follow-up happened by email and memory, if it happened at all. This puts the whole loop on the record: the student is notified the moment they're marked absent, they have a clear way to explain themselves or catch up, and a teacher or training manager decides — with every step kept for the training report.
How it works
Four attendance statuses. Each student is Attended, Attended (post-class), Absent, or Absent (justified), instead of unmarked. Nothing is recorded until the teacher signs the class — that's the moment every still-unmarked student becomes Absent.
Signing is repeatable. A training manager can reopen a signed register, correct it, and sign again — every signature is kept as history, nothing is overwritten.
Automatic missed-class email. Signing sends each Absent student one email naming the class, date, location and content, with a link back to the class page — once per student per class, even across a re-sign.
Class work, requested after the fact. From the class page's Documents tab, a teacher can request class work with a deadline and description. Once the register is signed the request is frozen, but students can still upload — that's the point.
Absence justification. An absent student can submit an explanation or a document from the Attendance tab. The teacher or a training manager approves or rejects it, with an optional note; approving sets Absent (justified).
Uploads are permanent. Class work and justification files can't be deleted or moved by anyone once uploaded — they're the evidence behind the decision.
Unenrolled invitees are excluded. Someone invited to a class without being enrolled in the training can open it, but no attendance or evaluation is ever recorded for them — they're left out of the email, the class work notification and the attendance ratio.
Where it fits
Everything lives on the class page: statuses and signing in the Attendance tab, class work requests and submissions in Documents, justifications alongside attendance. The student's training record, the training report and its PDF now split missed sessions into justified, not justified, and credited after class.
Turning it on
This is part of onsite class attendance and needs no separate setup — signing a class register is already part of the existing workflow described in Teacher tools.
